How car park space counting signs work

A car park space counting sign gives a driver an answer before they turn into an entrance: how many spaces are available, whether the car park is full or whether it is closed. The useful starting point is the operator’s count and the rules for that site.

Start with the count your site already uses

A site may obtain occupancy information from a car park management system or camera counting. First establish which car parks the information covers, who checks it and where it needs adjustment. A displayed number is only useful when the operator understands what it represents.

Record the capacity of each car park and which spaces are available to the drivers reading the sign. Reserved areas and temporarily unavailable bays may need different treatment. Do not assume that the total number of marked bays is always the right public capacity.

Agree the rules before choosing a layout

FULL and CLOSED answer different questions. FULL tells drivers that no spaces are being offered at that time. CLOSED means that the car park is unavailable even if spaces remain. Decide when each applies, including planned closures and areas taken out of use.

If managers need to plan closures, agree who can change them and which car parks each person can manage. An activity record helps the team review changes, subject to the scope confirmed for the project.

Give drivers an answer they can read

A single car park sign can show a name, an arrow where needed and one availability message. A multi car park sign needs a distinct row for each destination, with the name, arrow and availability kept together.

Check the wording and layout from the driver’s approach. A long name that looks fine on a laptop may be hard to read before a junction. Use the same car park names on availability signs and entrance signs.

Plan for information that is no longer current

Agree how long a count remains useful and what replaces it when fresh information is unavailable. An old number can look current to a driver. An uncertain count should not automatically become FULL or CLOSED.

Include normal availability, FULL, CLOSED, an ageing count and the return of reliable information in your pilot checks. Agree the result the driver should see before wider rollout.

Discuss a ScreenZeno Parking pilot

ScreenZeno Parking is at pilot stage. Its dashboard includes capacities, closure calendars, manager permissions and an activity record. Counting-system connections, sign layouts and behaviour when information is unavailable are confirmed for each installation.

Send the site location, car park capacities, current counting-system details, existing sign details and target date. The project quotation should set out the scope, testing and responsibilities.
